India-Russia talks focus on defence, fertiliser, and space cooperation

During the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in India, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held extensive discussions with Indian leaders, focusing on defence cooperation, fertiliser trade, and space collaboration. The meetings reinforced the India-Russia strategic partnership, building on previous agreements from the India-Russia summit and bilateral discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin.

Lavrov met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and held an extended session with Prime Minister Modi, reviewing progress in bilateral trade, investment, and technology collaboration, while ensuring both nations minimize dependence on external pressures.

Defence and Fertiliser Cooperation

The talks emphasized joint production of weapons and expansion of fertiliser supplies from Russia to India. Lavrov confirmed that Russian oil exports to India have increased to support energy security. Both nations discussed mechanisms to strengthen bilateral trade and ensure consistent, secure supply chains free from external interference. These agreements aim to bolster economic growth and enhance strategic security for both countries.

Space and Technological Collaboration

India and Russia explored opportunities in the space sector, including joint satellite missions, research collaborations, and technology sharing. Lavrov highlighted the importance of advancing space technology capabilities to benefit both nations’ scientific communities. Economic cooperation was also discussed, focusing on investment opportunities, trade facilitation, and the IndiaRussiaTechCollaboration framework to drive innovation.

India’s Role in West Asia and Global Diplomacy

Lavrov commented on tensions in West Asia and North Africa, including conflicts in Iran, Libya, Yemen, Syria, and the Palestinian territories. He noted that many flashpoints are influenced by Western interventions, emphasizing the need for sovereignty in international relations. Russia reaffirmed solidarity with Cuba and other nations impacted by foreign interference.

With India presiding over the BRICS meeting, Lavrov suggested that India could mediate tensions, particularly between Iran and the United States, leveraging its diplomatic expertise. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, reviewing the progress of India-Russia cooperation since the 23rd Annual Summit. Both leaders agreed to continue strengthening the IndiaRussiaBilateralTrade framework while advancing joint projects in energy, defence, and space.
