Sohail Khan: India’s Kudo Warrior Who Made History

In a powerful display of determination and skill, Sohail Khan from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, has etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian male fighter to win a silver medal at the Kudo World Cup 2025. Held in Sofia, Bulgaria, the tournament saw Khan dominate his way through the early rounds and enter the final, a feat no Indian male had ever achieved in this full-contact Japanese martial art.

Kudo, a hybrid discipline blending karate, judo, taekwondo, and jiu-jitsu, is still relatively unknown in India. Yet, for Sohail, it was love at first strike. Formerly a national-level karateka and taekwondo athlete, he found in Kudo a discipline that brought all his passions under one roof. Guided by his coach, Dr Ejaz Khan, and fueled by inner grit, Sohail transitioned from part-time sportsman to full-time warrior.

Sohail's rise wasn’t overnight. Born to a middle-class family, he faced the traditional mindset that often discourages sports as a career. But medals changed perceptions. Backed by his coach and eventually supported by the Mumbai Income Tax Department, he began collecting victories winning gold at the Junior Kudo World Cup in 2017 and bronze at the Eurasian Cup in 2024.

At the 2025 World Cup, he overcame tough odds, including a fierce final that extended into a rare third round. Though he finished with silver, the symbolic weight of his achievement went far beyond the podium. For the first time in over a decade, India wasn’t just participating in international Kudo it was winning.

Sohail’s journey is not just a personal triumph but a national statement. “Sir, my next aim is to win gold for India,” he says confidently. With hopes of Kudo’s inclusion in the Asian Games and perhaps even the Olympics, he’s paving the way for future Indian martial artists. As the sport grows, one thing is clear: India now has a name on the Kudo map and it’s Sohail Khan.
