President Trump cites Charlie Kirk’s final plea to save Chicago during funeral
President Donald Trump paid tribute to Charlie Kirk during the activist’s funeral, calling him a “great American hero” and a “martyr” for freedom. As thousands gathered to honor Kirk, Trump shared what he said were among Kirk’s final words to him, connecting his memory to the ongoing crime crisis in Chicago.

“He was an all-American in everything he did,” Trump said. “One of the last things he said to me was, ‘Please sir, save Chicago.’ We’re going to do that. We’re going to save Chicago from horrible crimes.”

Kirk, who was born and raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, became known for his outspoken activism. Trump used the funeral platform to highlight both Kirk’s legacy and his own stance on violent crime in the city. He has repeatedly argued that federal intervention, including the deployment of the National Guard, is necessary to address rising violence.

During his speech, Trump criticized Illinois leadership, pointing to a weekend in which eleven people were reportedly killed. He questioned how state officials could downplay the severity of crime in the city. “You have an incompetent governor,” Trump said. “He thinks it’s OK when eleven people get murdered over the weekend. He thinks you don’t have any crime when eleven people get murdered.”

Trump vowed that any effort to restore order in Chicago would be carried out with Kirk’s memory in mind, portraying the fight against crime as part of honoring the activist’s legacy. “We’re gonna go to Chicago and we’re gonna have Charlie very much in mind when we go into Chicago, and we’ll get that one straightened out,” he said.

In the days leading up to the funeral, Trump had suggested he was prepared to send federal troops into Chicago “against Pritzker,” even though he had previously stated such assistance would typically require a request from the governor. His comments reflect his continued focus on violent crime in large cities and his willingness to directly challenge state leadership.

By connecting Kirk’s memory to his pledge on crime, Trump emphasized how individual loss and broader policy goals are intertwined. Supporters viewed the remarks as a promise to take decisive action, while critics argue the situation requires cooperation between federal, state, and local authorities.

As mourners remembered Kirk, Trump’s words gave the tribute a political dimension, pledging that the activist’s plea to “save Chicago” would remain central to his vision for reducing urban violence.
