Columbus residents enrolled in the Clean Energy Columbus Program can expect a bump in their electricity bills starting this June. The rate increase comes as part of the city’s continuing commitment to sustainability, with the program sourcing 100% clean energy for its participants. Supplied by AEP Ohio, the Clean Energy Columbus Program has helped many residents save on monthly power bills while contributing to broader environmental goals outlined in the Columbus Climate Action Plan.
Assistant Director of Sustainable Columbus, Erin Beck, confirmed that while the rate adjustment will bring higher bills, the program still offers significant advantages. Participating households have been saving approximately $100 per month on average, and the new pricing remains competitive. The updated rate is set at $0.09080 per kilowatt-hour, which translates to about $20 more each month for a typical household compared to the current rate.
The Clean Energy Columbus initiative has been instrumental in promoting Ohio-based renewable energy sources, supporting local employment, and decreasing the community’s reliance on fossil fuels. It has also helped fund sustainability projects within the city through a dedicated community grant included in the program’s framework. This grant has been vital in promoting environmental programs that reinforce long-term goals for healthier living and reduced pollution.
The Columbus Climate Action Plan emphasizes building a safer, more sustainable community and this energy program plays a central role in achieving those ambitions. It directly contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promotes energy independence by relying more heavily on in-state renewable resources. The city views this program not just as a cost-saving measure but also as a tool for long-term environmental stewardship and economic development.
Though residents will see a modest increase in their energy costs, city officials stress that the program’s benefits outweigh the rise. The updated rates are projected to remain in line with or below the utility’s Price to Compare rate, meaning participants may still enjoy savings even after the adjustment.
Crucially, enrollment in Clean Energy Columbus remains voluntary. Residents are free to opt out at any time without incurring fees or penalties. This flexibility ensures that households can make the best decision based on their budget and energy preferences. Those who wish to continue supporting local clean energy efforts can remain enrolled, knowing that their contributions are backing meaningful environmental progress across Columbus.
The city encourages open dialogue about the change and remains committed to transparency as it pursues a greener future. Officials believe this step forward aligns with Columbus’s vision for a clean energy transition that doesn’t just focus on utility costs but also encompasses job creation, public health, and long-term sustainability.
As the rate increase takes effect, residents are reminded that while their bills may rise slightly, their participation is funding a larger mission—one that focuses on creating a cleaner, more resilient city powered by renewable resources. This approach not only empowers households with cleaner energy choices but also plays a key role in shaping the energy landscape of Ohio for years to come.
