SPCA of Texas rescues 10 neglected dogs after owner’s death in Terrell

TERRELL, Texas — Ten dogs were rescued from a property in Terrell, Texas, on Thursday, October 9, 2025, after their owner passed away and no one came forward to care for them. The SPCA of Texas Animal Cruelty Investigations (ACI) Unit acted swiftly to remove the animals, preventing what officials described as a potentially fatal situation caused by neglect and lack of access to food, water, and veterinary care.

According to the SPCA of Texas, the ACI Unit was notified on October 8 that a resident of Terrell had died two days earlier, leaving several dogs confined both inside and outside a mobile home. Concerned neighbors had reportedly been trying to keep the animals alive by providing food and water through the fence. When an SPCA investigator arrived at the scene, around 10 dogs were found living in poor conditions, many appearing malnourished and distressed.

Because there were no known relatives or caretakers to assume responsibility for the animals, the investigator determined that an immediate seizure was necessary to ensure their survival. That same day, the ACI Unit obtained a warrant and began removing the animals from the property. The dogs—eight small breeds, including Boston Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, and Chihuahuas, along with two larger Labrador Retriever-type dogs—were transported to the SPCA of Texas Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center for urgent medical evaluation and treatment.

Veterinary examinations revealed multiple health issues among the rescued dogs. Several suffered from severe intestinal parasite infestations, flea problems, matted coats, and overgrown nails. Many also exhibited signs of long-term neglect, including dental disease, eye injuries, and malnutrition. One older male Yorkshire Terrier had a broken lower jaw caused by an untreated dental infection. Another dog tested positive for heartworms, a potentially life-threatening condition if left untreated. In a separate case, one animal had to be treated immediately for a suspected venomous snake bite, as indicated by swelling around its neck and ears.

SPCA officials emphasized that such cases highlight the importance of pet owners having a care plan in place in the event of death or incapacity. “These are unfortunate circumstances when a pet owner passes away without a plan in place for their care,” said Courtney Burns, CAWA, Chief Investigator for the SPCA of Texas’ ACI Unit. “If we hadn’t rescued them when we did, several of them would not have survived much longer. We are thankful to the citizen who reached out to us, and encourage others to do the same. That call gave these animals a second chance.”

The organization urges all Texas residents to create contingency plans for their pets, ensuring they will receive care in emergencies. The SPCA also encourages the public to report any suspected cases of animal neglect or cruelty through its official website at https://spca.org/abuse.

All ten dogs are currently receiving medical care and rehabilitation at the SPCA of Texas rescue center. Once their health stabilizes, the animals are expected to become eligible for adoption. The organization relies heavily on donations to continue its rescue and rehabilitation work, and supporters can contribute through www.spca.org/GIVE.

This latest rescue in Terrell underscores the ongoing challenges faced by animal welfare agencies across Texas. Cases of neglect following the death of pet owners are not uncommon, and organizations like the SPCA of Texas continue to play a critical role in preventing suffering and saving lives. Through community awareness, responsible pet ownership, and timely reporting, the SPCA hopes to reduce such tragedies and give abandoned animals the care and compassion they deserve.
