Santa arrives early as Chicago malls kick off festive photo sessions for families

The holiday season has officially begun to make its presence felt across the Chicago area. From dazzling décor and festive lights to store promotions and the unmistakable scent of seasonal treats, the city’s malls are transforming into winter wonderlands. But perhaps the most heartwarming sign of all is the arrival of Santa Claus himself. For families eager to capture a cherished holiday photo or simply share a moment of joy with the beloved figure in red, many malls across the region are hosting Santa photo sessions well before Christmas Day.

At the Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont, Santa’s grand entrance begins on November 14. The mall has planned several themed photo opportunities, including dedicated Pet Photos with Santa sessions scheduled for November 17 and 24, as well as December 1 and 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. For children who prefer a calmer environment, the Santa Cares event will take place on Sunday, December 7, from 9 to 10 a.m., offering a sensory-friendly visit tailored to special needs families.

Over in Aurora, Fox Valley Mall has already begun welcoming visitors to its “Peanuts Christmas Experience with Santa.” The festive setup, open daily through December 24, combines classic holiday charm with the timeless characters of the Peanuts gang. Although walk-ins are accepted, reservations are recommended to ensure a smooth experience. Pet owners can participate in Pet Photo Nights on November 24, December 1, and December 8, while the Sensory-Friendly Santa session is scheduled for December 7 at 9 a.m.

Gurnee Mills will launch its holiday Santa experience on November 20, featuring pet photo opportunities on November 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. The Caring Santa event, designed for families seeking a quieter, more personalized moment, takes place on December 7 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Similarly, Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills begins its Santa visits on November 28, offering Pet Nights on November 24, December 1, and December 8. Its sensory-friendly Santa event also falls on December 7.

The holiday joy extends to several other suburban shopping centers. Lincolnwood Town Center, Louis Joliet Mall, and Oakbrook Center all start their Santa appearances on November 14 or 28, with Oakbrook planning Pet Nights on December 8, 9, 15, and 16. In Orland Park, Orland Square Mall has already kicked off its Santa photo program, which includes a Pet Photos night on November 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and a Caring Santa morning on December 7 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Further south, River Oaks Center in Calumet City will welcome Santa on December 5, while Westfield Old Orchard in Skokie starts on November 28. The mall will host a Sensory Santa session on December 7 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., along with Santa Paws pet nights on December 8 and December 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. Across the state line, Southlake Mall in Merrillville, Indiana, begins its festivities on November 21.

At Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg—one of the region’s busiest holiday destinations—Santa’s photo station is already open. The mall will host multiple pet photo opportunities and Caring Santa events through early December, including sessions on November 23 and November 30, as well as December 7.

From Rosemont to Schaumburg, families across Chicagoland can find countless ways to make holiday memories this season. Whether it’s a traditional family portrait, a quiet moment for children with sensory sensitivities, or a fun snapshot with furry friends, these Santa sessions bring festive joy to visitors of all ages. With many malls offering early reservations and extended photo hours, Chicago’s holiday celebrations are in full swing—and Santa Claus is already hard at work spreading cheer long before Christmas morning arrives.
