Mumbai Indians (MI) kept their hopes alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race with a thrilling six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday (May 4). Chasing a daunting target of 229, MI made history by completing their highest successful 200-plus run chase in the tournament. With their third win of the season, the team, led by Suryakumar Yadav in the absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya, proved their resilience in a high-stakes match.
LSG, who won the toss and elected to bat first, put up a competitive total of 228/5, with Nicholas Pooran’s explosive 63 runs off just 21 balls, including eight sixes, leading the charge. His aggressive stroke play saw LSG accumulate 123 runs in just eight overs, before MI’s bowlers tightened the screws in the latter half of the innings, conceding only 105 runs in the remaining 12 overs. Corbin Bosch was the standout performer with two wickets, while Will Jacks, Ghazanfar, and Raghu Sharma each claimed a wicket. Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s expensive spell, MI kept LSG in check and limited them to a challenging but chaseable score.
MI’s chase was powered by the return of Rohit Sharma, who was back in the playing XI for the first time since a hamstring injury in April. Sharma, alongside Ryan Rickelton, provided the perfect platform, with a blistering 143-run opening stand in just 10 overs. Sharma scored a quickfire 84 off 44 balls, including seven sixes and six fours, before being dismissed. Rickelton followed shortly, but a steady partnership led MI to their target with six wickets in hand and eight balls remaining.
This victory marks a significant moment for Mumbai Indians, as they not only secured a crucial win but also set a new record for their highest successful chase in IPL history. With this win, MI has kept their playoff hopes alive, while LSG, sitting in 10th place, also remains in contention for a top-four finish, making the race for the playoffs even more exciting.
