F-1 Visa Slot Shortage Puts Fall 2026 Plans at Risk for Indian Students

Indian students admitted to U.S. universities for Fall 2026 are facing a shortage of F-1 visa appointment slots, raising concerns that some may miss August program start dates or be forced to defer enrollment.

Many applicants have already completed admissions requirements and received Form I-20 from their universities. However, students say the U.S. visa scheduling portal has shown few or no available interview appointments for weeks.

F-1 Visa Appointment Shortage Narrows Travel Window

Form I-20 confirms that a student has been accepted by an eligible U.S. institution and may apply for an F-1 visa. It does not guarantee visa approval or entry into the United States.

Applicants must still schedule and attend a consular interview, receive visa approval and recover their passports before making final travel arrangements. With many university programs beginning in August 2026, delays in obtaining an interview could leave students with too little time to complete processing.

Students and parents have reported repeatedly checking the appointment portal without finding available slots. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri also asked the U.S. Embassy in India whether the shortage was caused by a technical issue, an administrative backlog or a policy decision.

Students Could Face Enrollment Deferrals

Some applicants fear they may need to ask their universities for later-arrival permission or defer admission if appointments are not released before institutional reporting deadlines.

The shortage comes during the busiest period for student visa processing. The U.S. Department of State has expanded screening of student visa applicants, including reviews of online activity and social media. However, it has not said whether those measures are affecting appointment availability in India.

The U.S. Embassy in India and the State Department have not publicly explained the reported shortage or announced when more interview slots will become available. The timing matters because even after an appointment is secured, students still need enough time for the interview, visa processing, passport return and travel before classes begin.
