Carlos Alcaraz made a strong start at the Qatar Open 2025, defeating Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round. On a breezy night in Doha, Alcaraz took time to adjust but showed resilience, particularly in a crucial 18-minute seventh game that helped him secure the first set. In the second set, despite falling 0-40 behind on serve in the eighth game, he bounced back by winning 15 of the next 19 points to seal victory in one hour and 38 minutes."I'm really pleased about saving that game," Alcaraz said in his post-match interview. "Marin puts a lot of pressure when you're serving, he's a great returner. I'm really happy to stay calm in that moment, do my routine, and make good shots."
 

The 20-year-old Spaniard’s performance was followed by a special on-court moment with NBA star Jimmy Butler. The Golden State Warriors’ 35-year-old guard, who skipped the NBA All-Star Game, was in the stands cheering for Alcaraz. After the match, Butler joined the Spaniard for an impromptu hitting session, attempting a between-the-legs shot but missing. Both athletes were mic’d up, entertaining the crowd with their playful exchanges.Marin Cilic, 36, was playing his first tournament since undergoing knee surgery in November. Despite his experience and strong returning ability, he was unable to hold off Alcaraz in the key moments.

In other Qatar Open action, Jiri Lehecka upset seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov with a 6-4, 6-4 win, securing his 11th ATP victory in 2025, tying Alex de Minaur and Miomir Kecmanovic for the most wins this season.Alcaraz will face either Zhang Zhizhen or Luca Nardi in the second round as he continues his campaign for the Qatar Open title.
