BCCI Pressures Foreign Boards to Send Players for IPL 2025

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ramped up efforts to ensure that foreign players return for the resumed IPL 2025 season, starting on May 17, despite lingering concerns over safety following the recent India-Pakistan military tensions. Following the suspension of the league on May 9 due to the heightened security risks triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the BCCI has been working tirelessly to reassure foreign boards and players that the situation has stabilized.

BCCI Chief Operating Officer Hemang Amin has been tasked with directly contacting the Cricket Australia (CA) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to address any concerns. The league's resumption has been approved by the government following necessary security clearances, and the pressure is now on foreign boards to allow their players to return to India for the tournament's continuation.

Despite the escalating security situation earlier this month, BCCI officials have emphasized that the league is not facing any downsizing. The league has already communicated its plans to restart the tournament, and franchises are now in communication with their foreign recruits to ensure they can return in time. “We have been in talks with the foreign boards individually, while the teams are directly engaging with their players. We expect the majority to return,” a BCCI official said.

However, the situation remains fluid, and some players are still anxious about returning. Foreign players who left India in early May, such as Marcus Stoinis of Punjab Kings and others, have yet to confirm their participation. Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting is making efforts to convince players like Stoinis to return, although it seems unlikely that the Australian all-rounder will make it back. On the other hand, players like Xavier Bartlett, Aaron Hardie, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Marco Jansen are expected to return to India.

At Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a majority of the foreign players, including Devon Conway, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, and Matheesha Pathirana, are expected to return. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the team was in touch with its foreign players, with a clearer picture expected soon. Sunrisers Hyderabad, despite being eliminated from the tournament, is also hopeful that Pat Cummins and Travis Head will return for the remaining games, as Cummins has expressed his willingness to return. Similarly, Delhi Capitals, who are still in contention for a playoff spot, are in contact with their overseas players, including key player Mitchell Starc.

Although some foreign players are still uncertain, team officials remain optimistic. “We are confident that the majority will return, including our captain,” said a Sunrisers Hyderabad official. Similarly, Delhi Capitals officials are hopeful that their players will return in time for the crucial games. The IPL Final, initially scheduled for May 25, has now been postponed to June 3, which adds to the tight timeline for Australian and South African players involved in both the IPL and the World Test Championship Final, which is set for June 11 at Lord’s.

As foreign players and teams await further updates, IPL 2025 continues to be a focal point of attention, with the tournament's future depending on how well these logistical and security issues are handled. The BCCI’s continued efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for international players will be pivotal in ensuring the smooth resumption of the league, as the cricket world braces for more developments in the coming days.
