Officer Injured as Suspects Flee After GameStop Burglary on Northwest Side

A burglary-turned-violent incident unfolded early Thursday morning on Chicago’s Northwest Side when a group of armed suspects rammed a vehicle into a GameStop storefront, leading to a police-involved shooting, an officer injury, and a citywide search for the culprits. The situation has since drawn attention from law enforcement and oversight agencies as the investigation continues.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:26 a.m. in the 2900 block of West Addison Street, where Chicago police officers on patrol encountered what appeared to be an active smash-and-grab burglary in progress. Several individuals had already broken into a local GameStop by driving a vehicle through the front of the store, shattering the glass and gaining entry by force. Witnesses and police sources indicate that the offenders were armed, although it is unclear what specific weapons they carried or if they discharged any firearms during the crime.

According to police, the suspects quickly exited the premises and fled the scene in two separate vehicles—a red Jeep SUV and a white Chrysler sedan. As the suspects drove away from the burglary site, one of the vehicles struck a responding officer who was attempting to stop them. In response to the immediate threat, that officer discharged their firearm at the vehicle. However, law enforcement officials later confirmed that no individuals appeared to have been hit by the gunfire.

The injured officer was promptly transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for injuries that were thankfully not life-threatening. The identity of the officer has not been released, but authorities described the injuries as minor and said the officer is expected to recover.

The situation escalated when additional responding officers initiated a pursuit of the fleeing suspects. During the chase, however, an unrelated vehicle collided with one of the pursuing police cars, forcing officers to discontinue the pursuit for safety reasons. No officers were injured in the crash involving the unrelated driver, but the suspects were able to escape and remain at large as of the latest update.

Authorities have not yet disclosed how many individuals participated in the burglary or whether the vehicles involved were stolen. Surveillance footage and forensic evidence are being reviewed to identify the offenders and trace their movements before and after the incident. Law enforcement agencies across the city have been alerted, and detectives are working with local businesses and residents to gather further leads.

In accordance with standard procedures for police shootings, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has launched an investigation into the officer’s use of force during the incident. As part of that process, the involved officers have been placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days while COPA conducts its independent review. This measure is standard protocol in police-involved shootings and does not imply misconduct.

The burglary has sparked renewed concern over the frequency of smash-and-grab crimes in Chicago, especially those targeting retail businesses during off-hours. GameStop locations, in particular, have been frequent targets in recent years due to the high resale value of video games, electronics, and consoles. The use of stolen or disposable vehicles to breach store entrances has become a signature tactic in such crimes, often allowing perpetrators to act swiftly and flee before police can respond.

Police continue to request the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact detectives or submit tips anonymously through established hotlines. In the meantime, nearby businesses are on alert, and community members are being advised to remain vigilant, especially during late-night and early-morning hours.

As the investigation continues, both the Chicago Police Department and COPA have pledged transparency in disclosing the findings of their respective inquiries. The case remains open, and authorities are working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.
