Garland teen charged with intoxication manslaughter after deadly early morning crash

An 18-year-old has been charged with intoxication manslaughter following a deadly early morning crash in Garland, Texas, that claimed the life of another driver. The incident occurred at the intersection of North Garland Avenue and Kingsley Road, where a Nissan SUV was struck by a speeding Cadillac SUV and burst into flames. Garland police confirmed that the victim, a male driver of the Nissan, died at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of family members.

Investigators determined that the crash happened just after 2:30 a.m. when the black Cadillac, driven by 18-year-old Melendez, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed. The Nissan, which was traveling eastbound through the intersection, was hit with such force that it immediately caught fire. Surveillance footage shows the moment the Nissan erupted in flames and came to a stop near the railroad tracks, sending plumes of smoke into the early morning sky.

Authorities said the Cadillac continued traveling another 500 feet past the intersection after the impact due to the high speed at which it was moving. Melendez and his passenger, also an 18-year-old, suffered only minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Police said the totality of the circumstances led them to believe Melendez was intoxicated at the time of the crash, and he was taken into custody on intoxication manslaughter charges.

Residents near the crash site were jolted awake by the sound of the collision. Witness Becca Wilson described hearing screeching tires followed by loud explosions and crackling sounds as the vehicle burned. She expressed concern about the dangers of impaired driving in the area, especially for early morning commuters like her husband.

The crash has brought renewed attention to the intersection of North Garland Avenue and Kingsley Road, which has seen previous fatal incidents. Earlier this year, another crash in the same area involving an 18-year-old driver was linked to impairment as a contributing factor. Police and community members are urging drivers to slow down and avoid getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs, emphasizing that impaired driving continues to claim lives and devastate families.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash while awaiting toxicology results. The incident serves as yet another reminder of the dangers of high-speed driving and intoxication, both of which can turn an ordinary commute into a tragedy in an instant. As the victim’s family is notified and the community processes the loss, residents hope this latest fatal crash will lead to stronger enforcement and awareness campaigns to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
