Houston Dynamo FC Lose 4-1 to Tigres UANL in Opening Match of 2025 Leagues Cup

Houston Dynamo FC opened their 2025 Leagues Cup campaign with a tough 4-1 defeat against Mexican powerhouse Tigres UANL on Tuesday night, July 29. The match took place at Shell Energy Stadium in front of a sell-out crowd of 21,792 passionate fans. Despite a promising start and an equalizer early in the second half, Dynamo could not hold back Tigres' dominant attack as the visitors pulled away late to secure a convincing victory.

The first half offered an even contest with Tigres slightly edging the stats in possession and shots on target. Goalkeeper Jonathan Bond kept Houston in the game with two crucial saves just before halftime. However, in the final moments of first-half stoppage time, Tigres broke the deadlock through a well-placed strike from Ángel Correa, who connected with a diagonal long ball from Juan Brunetta to give Tigres a 1-0 lead going into the break. Dynamo responded quickly after the half. Brooklyn Raines intercepted a misplaced Tigres pass and set up Ondřej Lingr, who finished cleanly at the near post to level the score at 1-1 and temporarily shift momentum toward the home team.

The turning point came in the 63rd minute when a misplayed pass from Bond was picked off by Diego Lainez, who capitalized with a strong left-footed finish. Just seven minutes later, another defensive error from Dynamo this time a weak back pass from Artur led to a second goal from Correa, who beat Bond one-on-one. Jonathan Ozziel Herrera sealed the match in the final minutes with a fourth goal for Tigres.

Houston Dynamo FC will now look to regroup as they prepare for two more group-stage matches in the Leagues Cup. They will host Mazatlán F.C. on Friday, August 1, and C.F. Pachuca on Tuesday, August 5. Both games will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT. Fans are encouraged to attend and support the team in what could be decisive matches for advancing in the tournament.

Despite the loss, Dynamo showed moments of promise and will aim to capitalize on those strengths in their upcoming fixtures. With a vibrant home crowd and key lessons from the opening game, the team hopes to bounce back and stay in the Leagues Cup race.
