IMD Issues Heatwave Alerts for North and West India; Heavy Rainfall Forecasted in Eastern States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather advisories for mid-April 2025, highlighting severe heatwave conditions in parts of North and West India, while forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several Eastern and Northeastern states. In Delhi, the minimum temperature on Wednesday settled at 23.4°C, which is 1.8 degrees above the seasonal average. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 37°C, with humidity levels recorded at 50% at 8:30 am. The air quality index (AQI) stood at 184 at 9 am, placing it in the 'moderate' category.

The IMD has predicted severe heatwave conditions in West Rajasthan from April 16 to 18, with temperatures expected to soar. East Rajasthan and Gujarat are also likely to experience isolated heatwave pockets during this period. Warm night conditions are anticipated in these regions, as well as parts of West Madhya Pradesh.

Several regions, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Karnataka, and Gujarat, are expected to face hot and humid conditions on Wednesday. The discomfort index is projected to remain high due to rising temperatures and moisture in the air. In contrast, Eastern and Northeastern states are likely to witness significant rainfall. The IMD forecasts heavy rainfall over Bihar on April 17, and over Assam and Meghalaya on April 17 and during April 20 to 22. Arunachal Pradesh is also expected to receive heavy rainfall during April 20 to 22.

Additionally, isolated hailstorms are likely over Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha on April 16. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph are very likely at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar on April 17 and 18. Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Karnataka during the next five days. Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) are likely over Kerala and Mahe during April 16 to 19.

An intense Western Disturbance is expected to affect the Western Himalayan Region from April 16 to 20. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) with isolated hailstorms are likely over the Western Himalayan Region on April 18 and 19. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on April 18 and 19.

Isolated rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) is likely over adjoining plains of Northwest India during April 18 to 20. Isolated dust storms or thunderstorms are likely over West Rajasthan on April 16 and over East Rajasthan on April 17. The IMD also reports a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-4°C over Northwest India during the next three days, till April 18, followed by a gradual fall by 2-3°C during the subsequent three to four days. A gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C is likely over Central India during the next four days, with no significant change thereafter during the subsequent three days. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over Maharashtra during the next 24 hours, with a gradual rise by 2-3°C during the subsequent six days. No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the rest of the country.

The IMD has issued warnings for heatwave, warm night, and hot and humid weather conditions. Minimum temperature departures as of April 16 indicate markedly above normal temperatures (5.1°C or more) at isolated places over Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and West Rajasthan; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi; and at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh. Above normal temperatures (1.6°C to 3.0°C) are observed over East Madhya Pradesh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with normal temperatures over the rest of the country. The lowest minimum temperature of 17.9°C was reported at Ranchi (Chhattisgarh) over the plains of the country.

Maximum temperature departures as of April 15 were markedly above normal (5.1°C or more) at a few places over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with lightning at isolated places over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Coastal Karnataka. The IMD advises residents in affected regions to take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of extreme weather conditions.
