U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a major shipment of counterfeit luxury watches at a cargo inspection facility at O’Hare International Airport. The package, which had been shipped from China, contained 243 fake watches replicating well-known luxury brands such as Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Breitling, Bulgari, Cartier, Omega, Panerai, Richard Mille, Tag Heuer, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin. If authentic, the total retail value of these items would have reached approximately $6.64 million.

The discovery was made during a routine cargo inspection, where officers assess incoming international shipments for prohibited or illicit goods. Counterfeit luxury products are among the high-priority targets for enforcement, due to their economic impact and potential to mislead consumers. Using a combination of documentation checks and physical inspection, customs officers were able to identify the watches as imitations of the legitimate brands.

The interception comes shortly after another recent seizure at the same airport, where over 500 counterfeit watches from Hong Kong and China were confiscated. That shipment had an estimated value exceeding $9 million. In addition to the watches, authorities discovered counterfeit driver’s licenses, highlighting the broader scale of the smuggling operation targeting multiple illegal items.

The ongoing use of international air cargo routes for distributing counterfeit goods underscores the need for persistent vigilance by customs enforcement agencies. The counterfeit watches in this case were skillfully designed to imitate high-end timepieces, making it difficult for an average consumer to detect their lack of authenticity. These goods are often sold through unauthorized retailers or online platforms at prices far below their genuine counterparts.
