Worker Rescued After Falling Into Trench at L.D. Bell High School

A 34-year-old construction worker was rescued after falling approximately 15 to 20 feet into a trench box at the L.D. Bell High School construction site in Hurst, Texas, on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. along Pleasantview Drive, an area situated between the school buildings and the baseball field. Emergency response teams from the Hurst Fire Department arrived promptly at the scene and discovered the injured man unconscious inside the trench. The exact circumstances leading to the fall remain unclear, and fire officials have not yet released further details on what caused the accident.

Rescue personnel quickly set up a ladder system to descend into the trench box, where paramedics began administering first aid to the worker. After stabilizing his condition on-site, the man was carefully secured into a rescue basket. He was then lifted out of the trench and transported by air ambulance to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. Despite being unconscious when first located, the worker had regained consciousness and was able to communicate with responders by the time he was airlifted. As of now, his current medical condition has not been disclosed by hospital or fire department officials.

The trench box involved is a standard safety structure used in construction sites to prevent trench collapses. It’s unknown at this time whether any safety protocols failed or if the worker slipped while operating near the edge. This incident is the latest in a series of construction-related safety concerns across Texas as infrastructure and school expansion projects accelerate. L.D. Bell High School, part of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District (HEB ISD), has been undergoing renovation and site improvement work, which may include utility and field access trenching.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the situation to determine the cause of the fall and to ensure all safety measures are being followed. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) may be called in to conduct an independent review as is common in workplace accidents involving serious injury. This accident has prompted renewed calls for stringent safety checks and more oversight at active construction sites, particularly those near schools and high-traffic public areas. Community members and school officials are awaiting more information on the worker’s condition and any potential impact on ongoing construction timelines.
