Gukesh Reacts to Carlsen's Outburst After Shocking Defeat

In a gripping sixth-round clash at Norway Chess 2025, Indian chess prodigy and reigning World Champion D Gukesh stunned world number one Magnus Carlsen in a dramatic comeback win that left fans and the chess world buzzing. While the victory marked Gukesh’s first-ever classical win against the Norwegian legend, the 19-year-old’s post-match comments and Carlsen’s emotional reaction made just as many headlines.

Carlsen, known for his fierce competitiveness, could not contain his frustration after the loss and was seen banging the table, causing pieces to fall off the board in a moment captured by the official X handle of Norway Chess. Despite the visible frustration, he showed respect by shaking Gukesh’s hand and offering a pat on the back.

Gukesh later reacted with maturity and sportsmanship, saying he understood Carlsen’s emotions. “I mean, [it was] not the way I wanted it to be, but okay, I will take it,” he told Chess.com, referring to how he turned the game from a losing position. Addressing Carlsen’s table-banging moment, Gukesh added, “I have also banged a lot of tables in my career,” acknowledging the pressure that comes with high-stakes chess.

The young champion’s win was especially remarkable as he had been outplayed for most of the game. “99 out of 100 times I would lose,” he admitted. His comeback was described as “pure resilience” by his coach, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, who credited Gukesh’s refusal to give up even when the position looked hopeless. “He kept kicking, he kept fighting, and when the time got lower, that’s when the chances appeared,” Prasanna explained.

With this win, Gukesh moved to third place on the Norway Chess 2025 leaderboard with 8.5 points, just one point behind Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. The match also served as redemption for Gukesh after his round-one loss to Carlsen, where the Norwegian had dominated in a sharp, attacking game.

Carlsen’s frustration underscores how high the stakes remain for him even after stepping away from the classical world title scene. Gukesh’s win, meanwhile, strengthens his status as one of the most exciting talents in global chess and reaffirms that India is fast becoming a powerhouse in the chess world.
