PM Narendra Modi in Canada for G7 Summit Amid Global Tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Calgary, Canada, to attend the 51st G7 Summit, currently taking place in Kananaskis, Alberta. His visit to Canada follows a diplomatic engagement in Cyprus, where he was hosted by President Nikos Christodoulides. The summit comes at a crucial time as global geopolitical tensions escalate, especially due to ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, and the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Cyprus was marked by what the Ministry of External Affairs called a "memorable" interaction. PM Modi expressed appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality provided by the Cypriot government. After wrapping up talks focused on bilateral cooperation, regional stability, and cultural ties in Cyprus, the Prime Minister flew to Canada to take part in the G7 Outreach Summit.

The 2025 G7 Summit, hosted by Canada, will bring together not only the leaders of the G7 nations but also several guest countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be joined by leaders from South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, and notably Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The key agenda includes discussions on global community protection, energy security, the digital transition, and strengthening international partnerships.

This marks PM Modi's first major multilateral appearance following Operation Sindoor, a counterterrorism mission carried out by Indian forces in Pakistan earlier in May. During his stay in Canada, the Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and other world leaders. The outcome of these meetings could be significant, especially in light of increasing global instability and energy concerns.

The G7 Outreach session is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon and is expected to address ways to enhance global cooperation in security, digital transformation, and future alliances. Modi will conclude his three-nation tour with a final stop in Zagreb, Croatia, where additional diplomatic engagements are expected before he returns to India.
