A viral video of Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya singing Frank Sinatra’s iconic song "I Did It My Way" together at a lavish London party has sparked both curiosity and criticism. Hosted by Modi, the extravagant celebration attracted over 310 guests, including friends and family from across the globe. Among the attendees was former Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricketer Chris Gayle, who shared an Instagram story featuring a photograph with Modi and Mallya, praising the "lovely evening."
Modi, the former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner, captioned the video with a tongue-in-cheek remark, acknowledging the potential controversy: “Had an amazing night with 310 friends and family... Thank you to one and all who attended this evening and made it one of the most special nights for me. Hope this video doesn’t break the internet. Controversial for sure. But that’s what I do best.”
Both Modi and Mallya have been living in self-imposed exile due to serious legal issues in India. Modi, who has been living in the United Kingdom since 2010 after being suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), faces multiple allegations of bid rigging, kickbacks, and money laundering. Mallya, who has been dubbed the "King of Good Times," is wanted in India for defaulting on loans worth ₹9,000 crore and faces charges of fraud and money laundering. He was arrested in London in 2017 at India’s request but remains out on bail as legal proceedings continue.
The viral video of Modi and Mallya singing together, despite their ongoing legal battles, struck a chord with viewers for its irony. It highlighted how the two high-profile fugitives continue to live their lives lavishly while evading justice in India, raising questions about their defiance and self-assurance amidst the ongoing controversies surrounding them.
