A massive protest erupted in Bihar as members of the INDIA bloc took to the streets, opposing the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The protest, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its allies in the Mahagathbandhan, aims to highlight concerns over the revision process, which is perceived as rushed and designed to benefit the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

In the early hours of July 9, 2025, road blockades, or "chakka jam," were organized in various parts of Bihar, including Hajipur and Sonpur, where protesters set fire to tyres and blocked major roads. In Jehanabad, the RJD’s student wing took their protest to the railway tracks, disrupting train services. The protests coincided with a nationwide Bharat Bandh, called by 10 central trade unions and their affiliates, demanding a new labour code and a fair minimum wage.

At 10 am, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, are set to join the protest march in Patna, which will start from the Income Tax office at Golambar and proceed to the Election Commission office. The protest is strongly backed by the Mahagathbandhan parties, including the Congress, Left parties, Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), and independent leader Pappu Yadav.

Tejashwi Yadav, during a press conference, criticized the Election Commission’s SIR process, stating that it had caused confusion and was being conducted in a short timeframe. He also linked the revision to the NDA's political advantage, alleging that the process was designed to benefit the ruling alliance in the upcoming elections. The political turmoil in Bihar intensifies as the protest gains momentum, with police monitoring key protest locations across the state.
