Noida BDS Student Dies by Suicide, Blames Faculty for Harassment

In a deeply disturbing incident, a second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student at a prominent private university in Greater Noida, Jyoti Sharma, allegedly died by suicide inside her women's hostel room on Friday night. The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage and student protests on campus. According to police officials, the student blamed two faculty members for prolonged mental harassment and humiliation in a suicide note recovered from her room.

Jyoti Sharma, a resident of Gurugram, specifically named the teachers of the PCP and Dental Material subjects in her handwritten note. “They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been in stress because of them for a long time. I want them to face the same thing,” the note read. Her final words have shocked the student community and have put the spotlight on mental health and institutional accountability within educational spaces.

Protests, Arrests, and Ongoing Investigation

Following the incident, Jyoti’s family rushed to the hostel premises, where legal formalities were coordinated by the police. The Knowledge Park Police Station filed a case, and a forensic team was dispatched to the scene to conduct an in-depth investigation and collect evidence. Two university staff members named in the note were promptly arrested, confirmed ADCP Sudhir Kumar of Greater Noida.

The incident led to a spontaneous protest by hostel students, who gathered late into the night demanding justice and a transparent probe. Students raised slogans against the university administration and called for stronger protections against faculty misconduct.

The university, at the time of this report, has not issued an official statement, but internal sources confirmed that the two arrested staff members have been suspended pending further inquiry.

The tragic death of Jyoti Sharma follows a similar recent case in Odisha, where a student died after setting herself ablaze, alleging sexual harassment by a college lecturer. These recurring incidents have reignited national concern over student safety, mental health, and the pressing need for grievance redressal mechanisms in educational institutions.

Police authorities have assured Jyoti’s family and her classmates of a swift and impartial investigation. Her body has been sent for a post-mortem as part of the ongoing legal procedure. The incident remains under close scrutiny as the community demands accountability and systemic change.
