Emmy Awards 2025: Owen Cooper Breaks Record At 15

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards 2025 delivered a night of history, record-breaking wins, and emotional speeches. At the center of it all was British teenager Owen Cooper, who at just 15 became the youngest ever male winner of a Primetime Emmy. His role in Netflix’s four-part limited series Adolescence not only earned him the best supporting actor award but also symbolized how young talent continues to redefine television.

Cooper, who played Jamie Miller, a schoolboy caught in a murder accusation, stunned audiences with his performance and later with his humble, heartfelt acceptance speech. “I was nothing about three years ago, I’m here now,” he told a teary audience, emphasizing perseverance and courage. He also thanked his family, co-stars, and production team, insisting the award was a team victory. His achievement breaks a decades-long record set in 1973 by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he won, and places him alongside Roxana Zal, the youngest overall acting winner at 14.

The dominance of Adolescence at the Emmys was evident as the show bagged four top awards: best limited series, best writing, best directing, and acting honors for both Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty. Graham’s speech highlighted his humble beginnings, calling his Emmy “the most humbling moment of my life” and proving that “any dream is possible.” Doherty added humor, promising she would “bang on about Owen Cooper and Adolescence for the rest of my life,” while praising the show as the “definition of a team effort.”

Records, Surprises, And Other Winners

Beyond Adolescence, the comedy The Studio made headlines by breaking the record for the most Emmy wins by a comedy in a single season, collecting 13 trophies in total. Its creator and lead actor Seth Rogen accepted the award with humor, recalling that the only trophy he had ever owned before was a used bowling trophy.

The drama category was equally eventful, with medical drama The Pitt securing the award for best drama series. Stars Katherine LaNasa and Noah Wyle also picked up acting awards, further solidifying the show’s reputation as a powerful new entry in television storytelling. Meanwhile, Severance added to the night’s diversity of winners, with Britt Lower and Tramell Tillman earning acting honors. Tillman became the first Black actor to win best supporting actor in a drama, dedicating the award to his mother in an emotional moment.

Other notable wins included Jean Smart repeating her victory for Hacks, while her co-star Hannah Einbinder won her first Emmy. Variety and talk categories went to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show. Colbert, whose show is set to end, used the platform to jokingly ask for work for himself and his 200-strong crew, drawing both laughter and applause.

The night also offered lighthearted and heartfelt moments, from Jake Gyllenhaal surprising Owen Cooper during the weekend with a token of encouragement to host Nate Bargatze’s charity challenge, which led to a $250,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The 2025 Emmy Awards will be remembered as a night where history was made, dreams were realized, and television once again proved its power to inspire across generations.
