The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has officially approved the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) system, a new initiative that will allow mobile users to see the real, verified names of callers on their phone screens. This feature, developed in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), aims to bring transparency to digital communication by displaying the name used during SIM registration, rather than relying on third-party caller ID apps like Truecaller. The move is part of India’s broader effort to combat rising spam and fraud calls that have been affecting millions of users across the country.
Under the new CNAP framework, the caller’s verified name will appear by default whenever a call is received. Users will not have to download or register on any external application — the system will operate directly through the telecom operator’s network. However, for those who prefer not to share their names, TRAI has introduced an opt-out option. The CNAP feature will initially roll out on 4G and 5G networks, as older technologies such as 2G and 3G may not fully support the service. This upgrade represents a significant leap forward in user safety, privacy protection, and trust in India’s telecom ecosystem.
By displaying real identities, TRAI hopes to drastically reduce the number of fraudulent calls and anonymous scams that exploit unsuspecting users. The verified caller name feature is also expected to increase accountability among telemarketers and businesses using bulk-calling services. As India transitions toward a safer and more transparent digital environment, the CNAP system stands out as a major step in ensuring that every call comes with a trusted identity — paving the way for a cleaner, more secure telecom experience for every Indian mobile user.
