The sudden and tragic death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in September left the entire North-East grieving. Initially reported as an accidental drowning while swimming near Saint John’s Island in Singapore, the case triggered widespread doubts from the beginning. Many questioned the circumstances surrounding his final moments, especially as reports emerged that he entered the water without a life jacket. Two months later, the controversy surrounding his death has intensified after strong statements were made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Speaking during the Assam Assembly session, Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that Zubeen Garg’s death was not an accident but a murder. He stated that the government is emotionally invested in finding the truth behind the beloved singer’s demise. The CM revealed that an FIR was registered under BNS sections 61, 105, and 106, covering criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and death caused by rash or negligent acts. According to him, preliminary findings by the Assam Police suggested foul play early in the investigation. His comments have reignited debates across the state, prompting a renewed demand for justice.
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to attend the North East India Festival (NEIF) when the incident occurred during a yacht trip. Following his death, more than 60 petitions were filed demanding a deeper investigation. In response, the Assam government constituted a Special Investigation Team under the Criminal Investigation Department. Additionally, a one-man judicial inquiry commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court was formed to examine the case thoroughly. Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force is also conducting its own independent investigation. The commission has been given a deadline of December 12 to record statements and submit evidence. With the CM publicly calling it a murder, the case has taken a dramatic turn, raising expectations that new revelations may soon come to light.
