Actress Tamannaah Bhatia’s appointment as the brand ambassador for Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited, specifically for the iconic Mysore Sandal Soap, has sparked a political storm in Karnataka. This is not an isolated case, as it is a common practice for state governments to appoint prominent celebrities to promote certain sectors. For instance, Samantha was previously appointed as the Telangana handloom brand ambassador.
However, Tamannaah’s appointment has triggered a wave of political debates, especially in the context of the growing Kannada imposition movement in Karnataka. The appointment has faced opposition from some sections of the public who raised questions on why a non-Kannada actress like Tamannaah was chosen for the prestigious role.
One social media user questioned, "Why couldn’t they bring in someone who knows Kannada for the event? Why weren’t there any Kannada actresses?" Another extremist social media post criticized the decision, saying, "Why is the anti-Kannada Congress government ignoring Kannada actresses for Mysore Sandal Soap? They spent a massive ₹6.2 crore of public money on non-Kannada star Tamannaah Bhatia for two years while Kannadigas’ pride gets sidelined."
Despite the criticism, the Karnataka government has defended its decision, asserting that it was a purely professional choice. Officials explained that Tamannaah is a popular actress across India and her image would help promote the brand’s value. The government believes her widespread recognition will help elevate the visibility and reach of Mysore Sandal Soap, regardless of her regional affiliation.
