Women’s Day 2026: Key Empowerment Schemes Every Woman Should Know About

Empowering Rural Women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) has made a significant impact on empowering rural women by creating Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups enable women to access affordable loans, skill development programs, and crucial support to start or expand small businesses. Currently, over 10 crore rural women households are involved in more than 90 lakh SHGs, making it one of the largest networks of women-led community institutions globally. This initiative not only enhances financial inclusion but also fosters a strong sense of community and collaboration, with women helping each other through banking services and guidance on farming and livestock management.

Integrating Technology: The NaMo Drone Didi Scheme

The NaMo Drone Didi scheme is a pioneering initiative aimed at integrating modern technology into rural women's empowerment. Under this scheme, selected women SHGs are equipped with drones that are used in agriculture for spraying pesticides and fertilizers efficiently. The government provides 80% financial assistance for drone packages, along with training for drone pilots and assistants. This initiative has the potential to reduce farming costs and increase crop productivity, while also providing an additional income stream for women who offer drone services to other farmers. By embracing technology, this scheme is transforming the role of women in the agricultural sector and improving farm efficiency.

Expanding Market Access: The Womaniya Initiative

The Womaniya initiative, launched under the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), focuses on helping women-led enterprises access larger markets, particularly government procurement opportunities. By January 2026, over 2 lakh women-led micro and small enterprises were registered on the platform, and these businesses secured procurement orders worth over Rs 80,000 crore. This initiative not only provides market opportunities but also strengthens the business acumen of women by linking them with organizations like SEWA Bharat, Usha Silai School, and UN Women for training and mentorship. The Womaniya initiative is an essential step in empowering women to expand their reach beyond local markets and compete in larger economic landscapes.

Financial Support for Small Businesses: PM SVANidhi and Stand-Up India

Financial schemes such as PM SVANidhi and Stand-Up India have been pivotal in helping women entrepreneurs access the capital they need to grow their businesses. The PM SVANidhi scheme provides collateral-free loans to street vendors, helping them restart or expand their businesses with loans starting from Rs 15,000. As of December 2025, over 1.46 crore loans had been sanctioned, providing much-needed financial support to small traders. Similarly, the Stand-Up India scheme offers loans ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore to women entrepreneurs looking to start businesses in manufacturing, services, or trading. These schemes are crucial in fostering entrepreneurship and ensuring that women have the financial support needed to succeed in business.

A Changing Economic Landscape for Women

The collective impact of these empowerment schemes is gradually transforming the economic landscape for women in India. Through financial support, skill-building initiatives, and access to modern technology, women are moving beyond traditional roles and emerging as entrepreneurs, business leaders, and active contributors to India’s economic growth. Whether in agriculture, street vending, or manufacturing, women are taking on leadership roles and building stable incomes for themselves and their families. These initiatives are creating long-term benefits, not just for individual women, but also for local communities and the country’s overall economic development. As women continue to play a larger role in the economy, these empowerment schemes are helping to close the gender gap and create a more inclusive and equitable society.
