Amit Shah Predicts BJP Sweep In Bengal, Claims 110 Of 152 Phase 1 Seats

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on April 24, 2026, expressed strong confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects in the West Bengal Assembly elections, asserting that the surge in voter turnout signals a decisive shift in favour of the party. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata a day after Phase 1 polling, Shah claimed that the BJP is on track to win more than 110 of the 152 seats that went to polls, indicating a potential change in power in the state.

He stated that feedback from the ground suggests that voters have already made up their minds in favour of development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shah interpreted the record turnout as a clear indication of anti-incumbency against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “The high voter turnout clearly shows that Didi is on her way out and BJP is set to form the next government,” he said.

Elaborating on the party’s internal assessment, Shah maintained that the BJP would cross the majority mark soon after the second phase of polling. He projected that growing voter enthusiasm would continue into the next phase, urging voters to support what he described as a “wave of change.” He also spoke about a broader political shift in eastern India, suggesting that regions like Anga, Banga, and Kalinga could come under BJP influence after the elections.

The Union Home Minister outlined key promises if the BJP comes to power in West Bengal, including tackling infiltration, curbing corruption, ending appeasement politics, and improving employment opportunities for youth. He also emphasised women’s safety and restoration of law and order as top priorities under a BJP-led government.

Targeting Mamata Banerjee, Shah accused her of spreading misinformation about the BJP and creating fear among voters. He assured that the party would appoint a Chief Minister from within the state, someone familiar with Bengal’s culture and language, while also taking a swipe at dynastic politics.

The first phase of polling in West Bengal witnessed a historic voter turnout of over 91%, the highest since Independence, intensifying the political contest between the BJP and TMC. While both parties are interpreting the high participation as a sign of support, analysts suggest that voter turnout alone cannot determine the final outcome.

With the second phase scheduled for April 29 and counting set for May 4, the Bengal election remains one of the most closely watched political battles in the country. The results will ultimately decide whether the BJP’s projections hold true or if the TMC retains its stronghold in the state.
