Iran condemns Israeli flotilla raid as piracy amid global protests

Israel flotilla attack triggers global outrage

The Israel flotilla attack has sparked widespread international condemnation after Israeli naval forces intercepted vessels from the Global Sumud flotilla in international waters nearly 1,000 km from Israel near Crete. The operation led to the detention of hundreds of activists and seizure of aid ships, raising serious concerns about legality, human rights, and humanitarian access to Gaza.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei strongly condemned the raid, calling it “piracy” and “terrorism”. He emphasized that the Global Sumud flotilla consisted of human rights activists attempting to deliver aid to Palestinians facing a severe humanitarian crisis. According to him, the attack was not just against a relief effort but a blow to global values and human conscience.

Reports indicate that Israeli forces boarded 22 out of 58 vessels, detaining approximately 175 to 211 activists. Organizers described the operation as an illegal interception of civilians in international waters, stating that the flotilla was engaged in peaceful humanitarian work. The detained individuals were transferred to Ketziot prison, a facility often linked to allegations of mistreatment. Baghaei further alleged that the transfer involved humiliating and inhumane treatment, reflecting broader concerns about human rights violations.

Iran has called on the United Nations and the international community to take immediate action, urging them to condemn Israel and secure the release of all detained activists. At least 11 countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, and Spain, have criticized the operation, calling it a violation of international law and demanding accountability.

The Israel flotilla attack has also triggered mass protests in Italy, with thousands taking to the streets in Rome, Milan, Naples, and Turin. Demonstrators labeled the incident a “declaration of war” due to its location far from Israeli territory and criticized the government’s response. Protesters urged Italian leadership to adopt a stronger stance, recall its ambassador, and push for the activists’ release.

As tensions continue to escalate, the incident has intensified debate over maritime law, humanitarian missions, and the broader Iran-Israel conflict. The situation remains under close global scrutiny, with increasing pressure on international bodies to respond decisively.
