BJP's Kalita Majhi Wins MLA Seat in Ausgram, Reflecting Bengal's Political Shift

Kolkata, May 5, 2026 – In a remarkable victory that epitomizes political transformation and grassroots mobilization, Kalita Majhi, a former domestic worker from Guskara, has emerged as the newly elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Ausgram constituency in West Bengal. Her success is part of a broader landslide win for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has made substantial gains in the state, previously dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Majhi secured 1,07,692 votes, defeating her opponent Shyama Prasanna Lohar by a significant margin of 12,535 votes, marking a personal triumph and a symbol of social mobility through politics.

Kalita Majhi’s journey to the Assembly is both inspiring and historic. Prior to entering politics, Majhi worked as a domestic helper in four households, earning a modest monthly income of Rs. 2,500. Her candidacy was initially seen as a nod to grassroots politics, and the BJP's decision to renominate her for the 2026 elections paid off as it resonated with local voters. Majhi had previously contested in the 2021 Assembly elections but had lost by a margin of 11,815 votes. This time, however, her deep connection to the community proved to be a game-changer. Majhi’s victory is also a powerful testament to the socio-economic mobility that electoral politics can offer, particularly in a state with a rich and often challenging political landscape.

Her win comes amid the BJP’s sweeping victory in West Bengal, where the party has secured 206 seats in the 294-member state Assembly, crossing the two-thirds majority threshold and ending the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule. This win is significant not only for the BJP but for the political dynamics of West Bengal, as it marks the first time since 1972 that the state will be governed by the same party in power at the Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the results, declaring that "Lotus has bloomed in West Bengal," attributing the party’s victory to its organizational strength and voter outreach.

In a major upset, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, further adding to the BJP's dominance in the state. Banerjee, while alleging irregularities in several constituencies, vowed that the Trinamool Congress would "bounce back," though the results suggested a significant erosion of her party's support base in multiple regions. As the BJP consolidates its power in Bengal, Majhi’s election marks a new chapter of leadership from the grassroots, embodying the changing tides of political engagement in the state.

Kalita Majhi's victory stands as a shining example of how grassroots democracy can reshape political leadership, taking a domestic worker from Guskara to the corridors of power in the West Bengal Assembly. This win not only signifies a personal achievement but also reflects the larger shift in Bengal’s political landscape, one where socio-economic mobility and political engagement are redefining the state's future.
