Police Clash With Namaz Protesters In Kolkata Park Circus, Bengal CM Issues Warning

Bengal Police Crackdown After Park Circus Namaz Protest Violence

Tension continued to grip Kolkata’s Park Circus area after violent protests over restrictions on roadside namaz and anti-encroachment drives left several police personnel injured and triggered a large-scale police crackdown. The unrest, which erupted on Sunday evening at the busy Park Circus Seven Point Crossing, has now become one of the biggest law-and-order flashpoints in West Bengal in recent months.

The BJP-led West Bengal government responded with heavy deployment of Kolkata Police and Central Armed Police Forces across sensitive areas of central Kolkata. Officials confirmed that at least 40 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, while more detentions are expected as investigators examine video footage and local intelligence inputs.

According to police officials, protesters gathered near Park Circus to oppose the state government’s recent restrictions on roadside namaz gatherings and actions against encroachments in several Muslim-majority localities. The demonstrations soon escalated after protesters allegedly blocked roads, raised slogans and clashed with police personnel attempting to restore normal traffic movement.

During the confrontation, stones and bricks were reportedly hurled at security personnel and official vehicles. Several police vehicles, including a CRPF bus, were damaged during the violence. Authorities later launched baton charges to disperse crowds and clear blocked roads around the Park Circus Seven Point Crossing, one of Kolkata’s busiest traffic junctions.

At least 10 police and security personnel suffered injuries during the clashes, prompting the administration to tighten security arrangements across Park Circus, Tiljala and adjoining localities. Senior police officers remained deployed overnight while surveillance and patrol operations were intensified to prevent further disturbances.

Government Sends Strong Message

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Park Circus on Monday and met injured security personnel. During his visit, he issued a strong warning against violence and stone-pelting, saying the administration would maintain a zero-tolerance policy against vandalism carried out under religious slogans.

Adhikari stated that while citizens have the right to seek answers from authorities and protest peacefully, violence and attacks on security personnel would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Referring to incidents of stone-pelting, he said such activities had already declined in conflict-prone regions like Kashmir and should not be allowed to continue in Bengal.

The Chief Minister also criticised the previous administration, accusing it of failing to take strict action during similar incidents in the past. He claimed that the current government would act firmly against anyone attempting to disrupt law and order in the state.

Meanwhile, authorities continued large-scale security operations throughout Monday. Barricades were installed at several strategic points, while police and CRPF personnel carried out route marches to reassure residents and deter any fresh unrest. Security checks were intensified near mosques, marketplaces and sensitive intersections across central Kolkata.

CAPF Deployment and Political War

The violence has also triggered a sharp political confrontation between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress. BJP leaders accused opposition groups of encouraging unrest and protecting those involved in attacks on police personnel. In response, the Trinamool Congress rejected the allegations and accused the BJP government of targeting minority communities under the guise of anti-encroachment operations.

Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticised the administration’s handling of the situation and said Bengal has historically believed in communal harmony and peaceful coexistence. She also attacked what she described as “bulldozer politics” linked to recent anti-encroachment drives in Kolkata.

Amid growing tensions, Adhikari announced that discussions were underway with the Union Home Ministry regarding continued deployment of Central Armed Police Forces in West Bengal. He urged the Centre to allow the 40 companies of paramilitary forces currently stationed in the state to remain deployed until additional arrangements could be made.

Officials said the paramilitary deployment was initially arranged during the recent Assembly elections but may now continue due to concerns over security and manpower shortages. Flag marches by police and CRPF personnel continued throughout the day in Park Circus and nearby areas as authorities attempted to restore confidence among residents.

The situation remained tense but largely under control on Monday evening. Investigators are continuing to identify individuals allegedly involved in vandalism and attacks on police personnel through CCTV footage and social media videos circulating online.

Political observers believe the Park Circus clashes could become a major political issue in West Bengal ahead of future elections, especially as debates intensify over religious gatherings, public space regulations and law-and-order policies. With both the ruling BJP and opposition parties escalating their attacks, the incident is expected to dominate political discourse in the state in the coming days.

Authorities have appealed for calm and urged citizens not to spread rumours or inflammatory content online. Security forces remain on high alert as Kolkata continues to witness heightened political and communal sensitivities following the Park Circus violence.
