St Stephen’s College has entered a historic phase as Susan Elias is set to become its first woman principal, while Delhi University has raised objections over the selection process.
Historic First For St Stephen’s
St Stephen’s College, one of Delhi University’s most recognised institutions, is set to appoint Professor Susan Elias as its first woman principal in its 145-year history. She is expected to take charge from June 1 and will become the 14th principal of the college. Her appointment marks an important milestone for women’s leadership in Indian higher education.
Why DU Objected
The appointment has also created a fresh dispute between St Stephen’s College and Delhi University. DU has objected to the selection process, saying the committee did not follow University Grants Commission norms. The university said the panel should have included university-nominated experts and a vice-chancellor’s nominee.
College Defends Appointment
St Stephen’s College has defended the move by citing its minority institution status under Article 30(1) of the Constitution. The college maintains that it has autonomy in matters related to appointments and administration. This has once again brought focus to the long-running debate between DU oversight and institutional autonomy.
Who Is Susan Elias?
Susan Elias is a computer scientist and academic administrator with more than three decades of experience in higher education. She has earlier held leadership roles at institutions including Chandigarh University and VIT Chennai. Her appointment is now being seen as both a historic breakthrough and a major development in the DU-St Stephen’s governance debate.
