Court adjourns divorce hearing
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and his estranged wife Sangeetha Sornalingam’s divorce case has been adjourned to August 7 after the matter came up for hearing before the Chengalpattu Mahila court on Monday morning 10.30 am. The case, which has drawn wide public attention due to Vijay’s political position and cinema background, remains pending before the court.
The hearing was scheduled after earlier proceedings were deferred. Reports said the petition was filed by Sangeetha in February, and the matter was initially listed for April 20. After both sides reportedly did not appear during the earlier hearing, the court directed them to be present on June 15. The latest adjournment means the legal process will continue in August.
Petition includes serious allegations
According to the petition, Sangeetha has accused Vijay of being involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor. The plea reportedly states that she became aware of the alleged relationship in 2021 and that Vijay gave repeated assurances that it would end. These are allegations made in the divorce petition and have not been decided by the court.
The petition further claims that the alleged relationship continued through public appearances, trips and social media posts. Sangeetha has also claimed that she and the couple’s children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Sasha, faced humiliation due to the situation. The plea reportedly says she was subjected to mental distress and that certain facilities earlier available to her were withdrawn.
Marriage of 27 years under legal scrutiny
Vijay and Sangeetha married in 1999 and have been one of the most widely followed couples in Tamil cinema circles for decades. The divorce proceedings now bring their 27-year marriage into a legal spotlight at a time when Vijay’s public profile has expanded beyond films into active politics.
The petition has reportedly been filed under provisions of the Special Marriage Act. Since the matter is still before the court, the allegations, counter-position and final outcome will depend on the legal process. The next hearing on August 7 is expected to determine how the case proceeds further.
Political and film career remain in focus
The case is unfolding while Vijay is also handling major political and film-related developments. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, recently gained strong attention in Tamil Nadu politics, and Vijay took oath as Chief Minister on May 10. His political rise has kept every development around him under intense public scrutiny.
At the same time, his final film Jana Nayagan has also remained in the news over certification-related issues. The film was expected to be a major release, but reports said it faced delays after objections were raised during the certification process. With his personal legal case, political responsibilities and film commitments all drawing attention, Vijay is currently facing one of the most closely watched phases of his public life.
