Russia Launches 611 Drones and 70 Missiles, Kills 11 and Damages Kyiv Cathedral

KYIV, Ukraine — The Kyiv Dormition Cathedral attack came during a Russian barrage of 611 drones and 70 missiles across Ukraine overnight into Monday, June 15, 2026, Ukrainian officials said. At least 11 people were killed and 53 were wounded nationwide.

Five people were killed in Kyiv, where more than 30 others were injured, including children ages 5 and 6. Residential districts were struck, a high-rise apartment building was heavily damaged, and fires broke out at a market and grocery store.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the assault showed Moscow intended to continue the war. He called on G7 leaders meeting in France to increase pressure on Russia and provide stronger air defenses, including anti-ballistic systems.

Kyiv Dormition Cathedral attack damages historic site

The roof of the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra caught fire during the attack. The monastery complex, founded in the 11th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major center of Ukrainian religious and cultural life.

Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, condemned the damage as an attack on humanity, history and Christianity.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its strikes targeted military and industrial facilities connected to weapons production, workshops and recruitment centers. Moscow denied striking the cathedral and claimed a Ukrainian Patriot air-defense missile may have caused the fire. Ukraine rejected that account and said Russian drone fragments were found at the site.

The barrage followed separate calls involving Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of G7 discussions in France. The scale of the attack and damage to a historic religious landmark are likely to intensify Ukraine’s push for broader air-defense support.
