Columbus residents should expect Juneteenth 2026 closures and service changes on Friday, June 19, affecting mail, trash pickup, COTA buses, libraries, banks and city parking.
Juneteenth National Independence Day commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. The holiday became a federal observance in 2021.
Columbus Juneteenth 2026 Closures for Mail and Banks
USPS post offices will be closed, with no regular mail delivery. Regular retail and delivery services are scheduled to resume Saturday, June 20. FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will remain available.
Federal offices will close, and many bank branches are also expected to be closed. ATMs and online banking should remain accessible, although some transactions may not process until the next business day. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed.
Columbus Trash Pickup Changes on June 19
The City of Columbus will not collect trash Friday. Color-coded pickup will shift to Pink on Monday, June 22; Ruby on Tuesday, June 23; Gold on Wednesday, June 24; Gray on Thursday, June 25; and Navy on Friday, June 26.
Residents outside the color schedule will have a one-day delay for collections falling on or after the holiday. Recycling and yard-waste collection will continue as scheduled.
COTA, Parking, Libraries and Attractions
COTA will operate holiday service using Sunday schedules. City parking kiosks and meters will not be enforced, but posted restrictions for rush-hour zones, loading areas, taxis, valets, accessible spaces and permit zones remain active.
All Columbus Metropolitan Library locations will be closed. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is scheduled to operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Most private businesses are expected to remain open, but customers should verify local hours before visiting.
The changes matter most for residents planning Friday errands: mail, banking, trash collection and public transit will not follow a normal weekday schedule.
