Mexico Victory Packs Bay Area World Cup Watch Parties

Mexico’s 1-0 victory over South Korea packed Bay Area World Cup watch parties in San Jose and San Francisco, with both public viewing areas reaching capacity as fans celebrated Mexico’s place in the Round of 32.

Bay Area World Cup watch parties draw major crowds

An estimated 30,000 supporters gathered at San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose, creating a crowd far larger than at the earlier watch party. Security officials restricted access to the main plaza before halftime, while police maintained a visible presence around the event.

After the main viewing area filled, some fans moved to the upper levels of a nearby parking garage. One group ordered a television, power inverter and extension cable through DoorDash so it could continue watching the match from the street.

A San Jose resident identified as Victoria said the turnout was larger than expected but described the atmosphere as enjoyable.

San Jose businesses prepare for more Mexico fans

Businesses near San Pedro Square also experienced heavy demand. The Old Wagon Saloon & Grill said it stocked nearly two dozen kegs a day to serve the crowds.

Organizers are considering additional street closures to create more viewing space for the next public watch party.

Thrive City World Cup screening reaches capacity

Thousands of supporters also gathered at Thrive City Plaza outside Chase Center in San Francisco for a free outdoor screening. A march featuring a Mexican banda, six lowrider cars and Mayor Daniel Lurie opened the event before the plaza reached capacity.

Hundreds of additional fans continued cheering from outside the gates. Although Mexico supporters made up most of the crowd, fans of other teams also joined the event.

South Korea supporter Andrew Choi said Mexico fans welcomed his group and asked to take selfies. Esteban Diaz, who was visiting from Guadalajara, Mexico, said the Bay Area turnout exceeded his expectations.

Diaz had purchased tickets months earlier for an upcoming World Cup match in Santa Clara. Following the strong response, Chase Center officials said more free Thrive City viewing events would be added for upcoming tournament matches.

The turnout demonstrates the strength of World Cup interest across the Bay Area and suggests that future public screenings could attract similarly large crowds.
