San Pedro Square World Cup Watch Parties Draw 30,000 Fans in San Jose

More than 30,000 soccer fans packed San Pedro Square for one of San Jose’s World Cup watch parties, turning the downtown district into a crowded international fan zone. Some supporters were turned away after the Mexico-South Korea screening reached capacity.

San Pedro Square World Cup Watch Parties Boost Downtown Businesses

The San Jose Earthquakes designated San Pedro Square as the official Soccer Celebration headquarters, bringing large match-day crowds to the blocked-off streets and surrounding businesses.

Restaurants and bars have spent more than a week adjusting staffing and supplies to meet the unusually high demand. Douglas Cookerly, vice president of operations at Sushi Confidential, described the rush as “the Super Bowl on steroids.”

Cookerly said the restaurant increased food orders, restocked beer and liquor daily and called in reserve workers.

Warm weather helped drive beverage sales, with beer leading demand and tequila close behind, according to businesses in the area. Owner Randy Musterer said Sushi Confidential became so busy that a water-usage alert initially appeared to indicate a leak. The increase instead came from additional dishwashing and heavier use of restaurant facilities.

Soccer Crowds Create a Festival Atmosphere in San Jose

Fans also gathered for the United States-Australia, Brazil-Haiti and Turkey-Paraguay matches. San Jose resident Luke Van Poetsch said the crowd noise, communal setting and vuvuzelas made the screenings more exciting.

The watch parties have drawn local residents and international visitors. Attendee Cai Clarke described the atmosphere as having “really, really good vibes.”

For San Pedro Square businesses, the events are doing more than generating short-term sales. They are introducing downtown San Jose to first-time visitors and demonstrating how major soccer gatherings can support local restaurants, bars and public spaces.
