Indian passport visa-free destinations: 56 travel options remain after index slip

Indian passport visa-free destinations remain a key travel option even after India slipped two places to 80th in a July update of the Henley Passport Index.

Indian citizens still have access to 56 destinations through visa-free entry, visa on arrival or electronic travel authorization, according to the access categories cited in the update.

Indian passport visa-free destinations remain open

The easier travel options include 27 visa-free destinations, 26 visa-on-arrival destinations and three destinations that require an ETA before departure. The destinations span Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

For Indian travelers, visa-free entry does not mean automatic admission. Border officers may still ask for passport validity, return or onward tickets, hotel bookings, proof of funds, travel insurance, vaccination documents or details explaining the purpose of travel.

Visa-free, visa on arrival and ETA rules differ

Bhutan and Nepal remain among the most accessible neighboring options for Indian citizens. Malaysia, the Philippines, Mauritius, Qatar, Rwanda and several Caribbean and Pacific destinations are also listed under visa-free access.

Visa on arrival works differently because approval is issued at an airport or another authorized entry point, often after a traveler submits a form, pays a fee and provides supporting documents. Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Jordan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe are among the destinations listed in this category.

Kenya, Seychelles and St. Kitts and Nevis require Indian travelers to obtain an ETA before departure. Airlines may deny boarding if the authorization has not been approved before travel.

What travelers should check before booking

Indian travelers should confirm entry rules through official immigration portals, embassies or consulates before buying non-refundable tickets. Transit rules also matter, because a third country may require a separate transit visa even when the final destination offers visa-free, visa-on-arrival or ETA access.

The passport index slip may affect perception of travel freedom, but the practical takeaway is narrower: Indian passport holders still have multiple easier-entry routes, provided they verify current rules and carry the documents required at the border.
