Modi Rejects Trump’s Mediation Claim on Kashmir Ceasefire

In a strong rebuttal to US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India has neither sought nor accepted any third-party mediation regarding the Kashmir dispute with Pakistan. This follows Trump’s recent claim that he helped broker a ceasefire during India’s military operation “Op Sindoor” in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack.

The matter reportedly took center stage in a 35-minute phone conversation between Modi and Trump, as revealed by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Modi, who is currently in Canada for the G-7 Summit, conveyed in no uncertain terms that India’s policy on Pakistan remains unchanged and strictly bilateral.

Foreign Secretary Misri, briefing the press, said Modi told Trump directly that India has “never accepted mediation, does not accept it now, and will never accept it in the future.” He added that there is political unanimity within India regarding this longstanding position. Modi’s firm tone comes at a sensitive time, especially as President Trump prepares to meet Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir during his ongoing visit to the United States.

The claim by Trump that he played a role in brokering peace has drawn scrutiny, especially in light of India’s consistent stand that all discussions with Pakistan must occur directly and only after Pakistan takes verifiable steps to dismantle cross-border terror infrastructure.

Modi’s response also mirrors his earlier statements, including one from May 12, where he emphasized that talks with Pakistan are only possible after it ends terror activities and vacates illegally occupied Indian territory. This phone call between the two leaders highlights growing diplomatic sensitivities, as India remains firm on its territorial and security concerns while navigating high-level international engagements.
