The third Test between India and England at Lord's ended with a narrow defeat for India, with the team falling short by 135 runs on Day 5. Despite a valiant effort from Ravindra Jadeja, India could not manage to recover after losing four wickets early in the session. India started Day 5 with six wickets in hand and the target of 135 runs in sight. However, the collapse of top-order batters left the team struggling, with England's bowlers – Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer – dominating the proceedings.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that India failed to establish any significant partnerships, which ultimately contributed to their loss. "A partnership of 60-70 would have made a difference. India never got that," Gavaskar said in his analysis. He also suggested that Ravindra Jadeja, who fought valiantly, could have adopted a more aggressive approach, particularly against Joe Root and Shoaib Bashir's bowling.
The match saw England’s bowlers taking crucial wickets, including Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Washington Sundar, with the lower order contributing very little to the total. Jadeja’s steadfast defense kept India’s hopes alive for a while, but once the lower order fell apart, the match was almost out of reach for India. Jadeja's contribution, however, was still praiseworthy as he played through challenging conditions and helped India reach a respectable score before their defeat.
Despite the best efforts of Jadeja and the lower order, England's bowlers, led by Stokes and Archer, sealed the victory after dismissing India for 170. Gavaskar, while acknowledging Jadeja's efforts, emphasized the missed opportunity for India to build partnerships, which could have turned the tide in their favor.
