OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5.1, the latest upgrade to its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The new version promises a smarter, more conversational AI with enhanced personality features. GPT-5.1 comes in two versions: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. Instant is optimized for everyday tasks like planning trips, coding assistance, and casual conversations, with a warmer and slightly cheeky tone. GPT-5.1 Thinking caters to complex or abstract questions, offering clearer, jargon-free responses while remaining empathetic and human-like.
The standout feature of GPT-5.1 is the introduction of new conversation styles: Professional, Candid, and Quirky, which complement existing styles like Default, Friendly, Efficient, Cynical, and Nerdy. Users can switch these styles in the app’s personalization settings, tailoring ChatGPT’s tone to suit professional, casual, or eccentric interactions. OpenAI emphasizes that this update is just the beginning, hinting at even finer-grained control over personality traits in future versions.
Available initially to paid users, GPT-5.1 aims to address feedback from GPT-5 users who found the previous model less warm. OpenAI promises broader access in three months, including free users, while legacy models remain available. This update positions ChatGPT not just as a smarter AI, but as a more adaptable, human-like digital companion, enhancing user experience across casual chats and professional assistance.
