Hyderabad twin elevated corridor work speeds up

Work on Hyderabad’s Rs 5,750-crore twin elevated corridor project has gained momentum, with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority pushing to complete the major road upgrade within 18 months. The project is expected to improve daily travel between Paradise Junction, Dairy Farm Road, Shamirpet ORR, Bowenpally, Suchitra and Secunderabad.

The two elevated corridors are being developed to reduce traffic congestion in northern Hyderabad and Secunderabad, especially along National Highway-44 and State Highway-1. Officials said construction is moving ahead on stretches where land is already available, while HMDA continues to coordinate with the Ministry of Defence, Revenue department and other agencies for pending land handover, utility shifting and statutory approvals.

Paradise to Dairy Farm corridor progresses

Elevated Corridor-I will connect Paradise Junction to Dairy Farm Road. Work is already under way in multiple sections. In one stretch, 18 foundations, 18 piers and six pier caps have been completed. In another stretch, seven foundations and three piers have been finished. Officials also said 33 girders have been cast for the corridor.

The road begins near Balamrai, close to Paradise Junction, where pier and pier cap works are progressing. A major interchange with two ramps is being built at Bowenpally Circle. From there, the corridor will move towards Suchitra Junction before ending near Dairy Farm Road.

Land availability remains the biggest hurdle. For this corridor, around 2.20 km of the required 3.20 km defence land has been handed over to HMDA, while the remaining one km is awaiting revised working permission from the Ministry of Defence. Private land acquisition is also pending in parts of the 1.60 km required stretch.

Shamirpet ORR corridor takes shape

Elevated Corridor-II will connect Paradise Junction to Shamirpet ORR Junction. About 7.50 km of the required 9.813 km defence land has been handed over, while the remaining stretch is awaiting revised permission. Officials said around 40 percent of the defence land stretch and nearly half of the overall corridor are currently available for construction.

Related works are also moving forward. For EC-I, 2.10 km of the proposed 2.79-km defence compound wall has been completed. For EC-II, 4.26 km of the proposed 11.74-km wall is complete. Defence sumps at Balamrai and Bowenpally are nearing completion, while work linked to other defence structures is still awaiting handover, tenders or approvals.

HMDA has also commissioned a batching plant at Base Camp-I and completed staff mobilisation. A second base camp is being set up at Telangana Sports Land. Utility shifting, boundary wall construction and tree translocation are progressing along available stretches.

Once finished, the Hyderabad twin elevated corridors are expected to reduce travel time, ease traffic pressure and improve movement across the city’s northern corridor. However, the 18-month target will depend heavily on faster land acquisition, defence permissions and clearance of pending utility works.
