A suspicious suitcase found in Midtown Manhattan during the opening day of the 81st United Nations General Assembly prompted a major police response, temporary street closures and precautionary evacuations. The NYPD later confirmed that the package was cleared and posed no threat, ending the security scare near the UN district.
NYPD bomb squad responds to suspicious suitcase
The incident began shortly before 3 p.m. on September 22 near East 43rd Street and Third Avenue, a short distance from the United Nations headquarters. Police were alerted to an unattended black suitcase on the sidewalk, prompting officers and bomb squad personnel to secure the area.
The NYPD initially warned the public that 42nd Street through 44th Street was closed between Second Avenue and Lexington Avenue because of a suspicious package. Officers asked pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area while emergency teams investigated.
A police canine was brought in to inspect the suitcase, while the Emergency Service Unit established a security perimeter around the location.
Midtown road closure disrupts area near Chrysler Building
The security response affected a busy section of Midtown East near the Chrysler Building and Grand Central area. Parts of the surrounding streets were temporarily closed as officers investigated, while sections of nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
Reports from the scene described heavy police activity, roadblocks and motorcade traffic linked to the UN General Assembly. The suitcase itself was found near East 43rd Street and Third Avenue rather than inside the Chrysler Building.
Package cleared after investigation
The NYPD later announced that the package had been examined and deemed not suspicious. Police said the item posed no threat, although part of East 43rd Street remained closed temporarily while officers completed their work.
The clarification ended fears of a possible explosive device. No injuries were reported, and authorities did not announce any criminal threat connected to the suitcase.
UNGA security remains heightened in New York
The scare came as New York hosted world leaders for the high-level General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly. The UN says the debate runs from September 22 to 28, with heads of state and government gathering to discuss global security, development, climate and other international issues.
The theme of the 81st session is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The concentration of political leaders and diplomatic delegations around Manhattan traditionally brings extensive security measures, restricted traffic and a heightened police presence.
The incident ultimately proved harmless, but the rapid response showed the level of caution surrounding UNGA week. With dozens of global leaders moving through Midtown and the UN district, even an unattended item can trigger immediate security measures until authorities establish that there is no danger.
