Putin Praises Elon Musk, Compares Him to Soviet Space Pioneer Sergei Korolev

In a rare moment of praise for a Western entrepreneur, Russian President Vladimir Putin has drawn a striking comparison between SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and one of Russia’s most revered scientific figures, Sergei Korolev. Speaking to a group of university students about the direction of Russia’s space program, Putin acknowledged Musk’s ambitious efforts in space exploration and suggested that his ideas, though bold, may one day come to fruition—just as Korolev’s once did.

"You know, there's a man, he lives in the States, Musk, who, one might say, raves about Mars,” Putin said, as reported by Russia’s state-run news agency TASS. “It is not often that such people, charged with a certain idea, appear in the human population.” Putin added that while Musk's vision of colonizing Mars may appear far-fetched now, history shows that seemingly impossible ideas often materialize when driven by passionate visionaries. “Just like in their time the ideas of Korolev, our other pioneers, got to materialise. They seemed incredible—some of the plans they made. But they all materialised,” he said.

Korolev and Musk: Visions That Challenge the Possible

Sergei Korolev, who died in 1966, was a legendary Soviet aerospace engineer credited with transforming the USSR into a space superpower during the Cold War era. Under his guidance, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, in 1957 and sent the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into space in 1961. Though Korolev’s name remained classified for much of his life due to the secrecy surrounding Soviet space operations, he is now hailed as one of the key figures behind the USSR’s dominance in the early years of the space race. Putin's comparison of Musk to Korolev is particularly noteworthy, given the current geopolitical tensions between the United States and Russia. Musk’s SpaceX has led the global private spaceflight industry with innovations in reusable rockets, satellite-based internet through Starlink, and plans to send crewed missions to Mars.

Praise Beyond Space: Putin on Musk’s AI Ventures

This is not the first time the Russian president has acknowledged Musk’s influence and intellect. In a wide-ranging interview with former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson last year, Putin discussed Musk's ventures beyond space, specifically mentioning Neuralink, the tech company aiming to integrate brain-computer interfaces. Responding to a question about Neuralink’s brain chip implants, Putin remarked, “I think there's no stopping Elon Musk. He will do as he sees fit.” He emphasized that the world must engage with innovators like Musk rather than resist them. “You'll need to find some common ground with him. Search for ways to persuade him.”

Putin continued, “I think he's a smart person. I truly believe he is. So you'll need to reach an agreement with him because this process needs to be formalized and subjected to certain rules. It is impossible to use AI today like it was in the case of gunpowder back then.” These comments signal an unusual openness from Putin, who has often taken a critical stance against the West’s technological dominance, especially amid mounting sanctions and diplomatic isolation. His remarks seem to indicate both a recognition of Musk’s groundbreaking role in science and technology and an acknowledgement of the disruptive power such innovation holds on the global stage.

A Global Visionary Recognized Across Borders

Elon Musk’s pursuit of a multi-planetary future and exploration of artificial intelligence has attracted both admiration and controversy. While many world leaders focus on conventional policy issues, Musk’s ventures span everything from rockets and brain chips to electric vehicles and underground transit. Putin’s comments, especially his likening of Musk to a Soviet-era national hero, place the Tesla and SpaceX CEO in rare company. At a time when U.S.-Russia relations remain strained over issues like the war in Ukraine, cyber warfare, and diplomatic friction, Putin’s words appear to transcend politics, focusing instead on the transformative impact of visionary thinkers. Whether intended as a gesture of respect or as a message to Russian youth about the value of innovation, the comparison between Musk and Korolev serves to highlight the enduring global appeal of ambition and imagination in shaping the future.
