Plane from New Jersey crashes in San Diego neighborhood
A deadly plane crash in San Diego during the early hours of Thursday resulted in the deaths of six people aboard a private jet. The aircraft had taken off from an airport in New Jersey and was preparing to land in San Diego when it struck a power line and crashed into a residential neighborhood shrouded in thick fog. The crash occurred in an area known for Navy-owned housing, startling residents awake around 4 a.m. with a series of explosions and a massive blaze.

The crash ignited multiple vehicles and set at least one home ablaze as jet fuel spilled into the streets, creating a highly dangerous and destructive scene. Witnesses described the horror of seeing fire spread rapidly with the fuel and hearing the thunderous impact. Local authorities, including police and fire officials, spoke about the sheer scale of the damage and chaos, with flames consuming vehicles and parts of homes along the impacted block.

Among those killed was a prominent music talent agent and two of his employees. The group had boarded the flight for business travel and were confirmed to have perished in the crash. A well-known former band drummer had posted a photo before the flight, and was also confirmed among the deceased. Tributes have poured in for the victims, many of whom were recognized figures in their respective industries.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was carrying six individuals. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were dispatched to the crash site, where they found debris from the 1985 Cessna 550 Citation spread over a wide area. A section of the aircraft’s wing was found on a nearby road, and multiple fragments were located under power lines, emphasizing the violent nature of the impact.

While there were no fatalities among local residents, eight people sustained injuries, primarily from smoke inhalation or in the process of escaping their homes. One individual was hurt while jumping from a window to avoid the fire. Several homes were damaged, with one house nearly entirely destroyed—its roof collapsed and its front charred beyond recognition. Numerous vehicles parked nearby were reduced to burned shells, and smoke continued to rise from stubborn fires hours after the crash.

In total, about 100 residents were evacuated from the area due to safety concerns. Jet fuel continued to seep into the streets hours after the incident, and the strong smell of fumes lingered throughout the neighborhood. Officials were unable to provide a timeline for when it would be safe for residents to return.

The private jet had taken off late Wednesday evening and stopped in Wichita, Kansas, for refueling before continuing on to its intended destination in San Diego. The aircraft was on final approach to a local executive airport when it crashed roughly two miles from the runway. Audio records from air traffic communication revealed that the pilot made a final check-in minutes before the crash, noting they were on approach.

Aviation experts have noted that due to poor visibility, the plane was likely operating under instrument flight rules. However, upon reaching a certain altitude near the destination, the pilot would have needed to see the runway visually. In cases where visibility is still poor, the required procedure would be to abort the landing and either attempt again or divert to another airport. It is still unclear why this did not occur.

This accident adds to the history of plane crashes in the region, where past incidents have also claimed lives and caused extensive property damage. The neighborhood affected in this latest tragedy saw widespread destruction, and while the quick response from emergency services prevented further casualties, the emotional and physical toll on the community is significant.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging any witnesses with videos or other evidence to come forward. Meanwhile, the families and friends of those who perished are left to mourn an immense and unexpected loss, and the local community begins the process of recovery and rebuilding.
