As summer approaches and families head outdoors, the YMCA of Greater Houston has launched a vital campaign to combat one of the leading causes of death among young children: drowning. The new initiative, “Phones Down, Eyes Up,” encourages parents and caregivers to eliminate distractions especially smartphones when supervising children near water.
Raising Awareness and Reducing Risk
According to the CDC, drowning is a top cause of death for children ages 1 to 4. Kennedy Conlee, aquatics director at YMCA Cypress Creek, stressed that 88% of drownings happen with adults nearby, underscoring the importance of undivided attention. The campaign is part of the YMCA’s broader “Safety Around Water” program, which will serve over 1,400 Houston-area families this summer, offering critical water survival skills to children and safety training to parents.
Empowering Families with Tools and Training
Swim lessons teach children to float, reach pool edges, and stay calm in emergencies. Parents also learn vigilance techniques, even when lifeguards are present. Houston parent Zach Gleeson, who enrolled his daughter, said constant supervision and safety gear are non-negotiables during pool time. The YMCA encourages all families to follow simple guidelines like always asking permission before entering water, designating a “water watcher,” avoiding distractions, and enrolling children in swim lessons early.
Financial aid is available to ensure every child can access lessons. For more on programs and enrollment, visit ymcahouston.org or contact saw@ymcahouston.org. The YMCA also shares updates on social platforms @YMCAHouston.
