India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, announced a significant expansion of Indian consular services across the United States with the opening of eight new Indian Consular Application Centres. This move, which began implementation on August 1, 2025, is aimed at improving accessibility and service delivery for the Indian diaspora residing in the country. The new centres have been opened in Boston, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Addison, Orlando, Raleigh, and San Jose, marking an important step in strengthening ties with the Indian community in the US.
In his statement, Ambassador Kwatra emphasized that these new centres will enhance the reach and efficiency of consular services. He also revealed that an additional Indian Consular Application Centre will soon be launched in Los Angeles, further expanding the network. The Ambassador highlighted that this expansion will not only increase the presence of Indian consular services across the US but also significantly improve the speed and ease with which these services are delivered to the community.
Starting August 1, all Indian Consular Application Centres in the US will also remain open on Saturdays. This step has been taken to cater to the needs of the Indian diaspora, many of whom face challenges accessing services during regular weekday hours. The Ambassador noted that extended operational hours will help in enhancing the availability and convenience of consular services, allowing more people to complete essential formalities without unnecessary delays.
The Indian Embassy also announced that several miscellaneous consular services have been streamlined and will now be offered through these new application centres. However, certain critical services will continue to be handled exclusively at the embassy premises to maintain security and procedural standards. The decision reflects a balance between decentralizing services for easier access while retaining control over sensitive consular tasks.
Ambassador Kwatra underlined that people-to-people connections remain central to the partnership between India and the United States. He added that the opening of new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles, as previously announced by the Prime Minister of India, will strengthen bilateral relations even further. These additions will particularly benefit the Indian communities in these regions, allowing them to engage more effectively with consular authorities and access necessary services without extensive travel.
The Indian government’s efforts to expand consular outreach come in recognition of the substantial Indian diaspora in the United States. According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs, around 5.4 million people of Indian origin, including 2.07 million non-resident Indians, currently live in the US. This community represents the third-largest Asian ethnic group in the country and has played an influential role in fostering closer ties between the two nations. The Indian diaspora’s contributions in areas such as technology, education, business, and culture continue to serve as a bridge between India and the US.
Earlier this year, the United States strengthened its presence in India by opening a new consulate in Bengaluru, bringing its total number of consulates in the country to five. This move reflected the growing importance of India-US relations, both in terms of strategic partnerships and people-to-people exchanges. The latest expansion of Indian consular services in the US mirrors these efforts and underscores the mutual commitment to deepening ties.
Ambassador Kwatra encouraged members of the Indian diaspora to stay updated by regularly visiting the official website of the Indian Embassy. This platform will provide detailed information regarding the new centres, their services, and operational updates. By keeping the community informed, the embassy hopes to ensure that all individuals can benefit fully from the improved consular infrastructure.
The opening of these new centres marks a milestone in enhancing consular service delivery for the Indian diaspora. With better accessibility, faster processing, and a focus on convenience, the initiative is expected to strengthen the connection between Indian citizens abroad and their home country. This expansion also aligns with India’s broader goal of nurturing strong global networks with its diaspora while fostering deeper diplomatic and cultural engagement with the United States.
