Indian boxers Vishvanath Suresh and Sachin Siwach advanced to the quarterfinals of the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 after impressive performances on Day 3 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
In the men’s 50kg category, Vishvanath Suresh displayed excellent control and technique to register a dominant 5-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Bekzat Ergeshov. He will next face Kazakhstan’s Sanzhar Tashkenbay, the reigning world champion, in a high-stakes quarterfinal bout.
In the men’s 60kg division, Sachin Siwach secured a hard-fought 4-1 split decision win against Mongolia’s Buyandalai Bayarkhuu. He is set to take on Cheng-Wei Lee of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, other Indian boxers also enjoyed success in their opening bouts. Priya (women’s 60kg), Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg), and Deepak (men’s 70kg) progressed to the next round, while Jadumani Singh (men’s 55kg) bowed out earlier in the tournament.
Top Indian names, including Olympians Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) and Nikhat Zareen (51kg), received byes in the opening round. Aditya Pratap Singh will be in action in the men’s 65kg category on Thursday, where he faces Saudi Arabia’s Mousa Alhawsaw.
The tournament has attracted 194 boxers from 21 national federations, with India fielding a 20-member contingent. Boxers reaching the finals in approved weight categories will secure direct qualification for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Notable absentees from the competition include Olympic medallist Amit Panghal, Commonwealth Games medallists Mohammad Hussamuddin and Nitu Ghanghas, and former Asian champion Parveen Hooda.
