Indian student’s death in Chicago highlights mental health and visa stress

A 26-year-old Indian student from Andhra Pradesh died by suicide in Chicago after struggling to find a job post-graduation. Facing financial pressure and emotional stress, he left messages before his death. A fundraiser is underway to support repatriation and assist his family.

Indian student’s death in Chicago highlights mental health and visa stress as Iraganaboyina Chandu, a 26-year-old graduate from Andhra Pradesh, died by suicide at his residence in Chicago on Thursday. Chandu, originally from Kurnool district, had recently completed his master’s degree from DePaul University and had been searching for employment in the United States for several weeks without success.

According to family members and community sources, Chandu had been experiencing significant emotional distress. He was reportedly troubled by his inability to secure a job and the financial burden placed on his family in India. His father, who works as a security guard in Kurnool, was said to be facing financial hardship, which further weighed on Chandu during his job search.

Authorities have not released detailed findings related to the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing. A friend of Chandu stated that he had scheduled emails and messages to acquaintances prior to his death, which have since been shared with law enforcement officials as part of the inquiry.

In response to the tragedy, members of the Indian diaspora in the United States have organized a fundraising campaign to support Chandu’s family and facilitate the return of his remains to India. The campaign set a goal of $120,000, citing an estimated $25,000 cost for international repatriation, including legal documentation, funeral arrangements, and transportation. As of the past two days, more than $76,000 has been raised. Organizers indicated that any funds exceeding the repatriation cost would be provided to his parents to help manage existing debts.

The incident has also drawn attention from public officials in India. Following an appeal on social media, Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh expressed condolences and requested assistance from Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu to ensure a smooth process for transporting Chandu’s remains. Naidu confirmed that he is coordinating with relevant authorities to expedite arrangements, stating that efforts are underway to support the grieving family during this period.
