Kerala health authorities have increased precautionary measures in Kozhikode after a 43-year-old man was admitted to hospital with symptoms suspected to be linked to Nipah virus infection. Officials said the case is being treated as a suspected Nipah case until final confirmation comes from the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
Health officials are closely monitoring the patient’s contacts and have advised the public to remain alert, follow hygiene precautions and seek medical help early if fever or related symptoms appear.
The patient was first treated at a private hospital and was later shifted to Kozhikode Medical College, where isolation arrangements have been made. Preliminary tests reportedly indicated a possible infection, but authorities said a final confirmation is necessary before declaring it a confirmed Nipah case.
Contact Tracing And Route Map Underway
Health department teams have started preparing a detailed route map of the patient’s recent movements. This is being done to identify people who may have come in contact with him during hospital visits, travel or other public interactions.
According to reports, the man had recently cleaned a rented godown by himself. Officials are examining whether there was any possible exposure to bats or contaminated surroundings, as fruit bats are known to be a natural host for Nipah virus.
Hospital Staff Asked To Follow Quarantine Measures
Medical staff and others who came in close contact with the patient have been asked to remain under quarantine as a precaution. Restrictions have also been placed near the isolation ward at Kozhikode Medical College to reduce unnecessary movement.
Local authorities in Ramanattukara, where the patient is from, have held an emergency review meeting. More steps are expected based on the final test result from NIV Pune.
Officials Urge Public Not To Panic
Health officials have said there is no need for panic at this stage. The situation is being handled with standard public-health precautions, including isolation, contact tracing, quarantine and monitoring of possible symptoms among contacts.
Residents have been advised to follow official health department instructions, avoid spreading unverified information and seek medical advice if they develop fever, headache, breathing difficulty or other concerning symptoms.
The final confirmation from NIV Pune will decide the next level of response. Until then, the case remains under observation as a suspected Nipah infection.
