Karnataka HIV Report Shows Treatment Coverage Gap
Karnataka is estimated to have around 2.60 lakh people living with HIV, while approximately 2.05 lakh are receiving antiretroviral therapy, according to figures cited from NACO’s Sankalak report. The rounded numbers indicate a difference of nearly 55,000 between the estimated population living with HIV and the number recorded as receiving treatment.
However, this difference should not be described as proof that all 55,000 people are unaware of their HIV status. The gap may include people who have not been diagnosed, those who know their status but have not started treatment, people who have stopped attending treatment centres and differences between estimated and programme-recorded data.
NACO’s website currently lists the sixth Sankalak edition for 2024–25 and a newer seventh edition for 2025–26. The publication year and reporting period should therefore be clearly mentioned whenever the Karnataka figures are used.
Karnataka HIV Campaign Focuses On Students
Students and young adults are being encouraged to understand their HIV risk through the Mobilisation for AIDS Suraksha campaign. A QR-based tool reportedly allows participants to answer confidential questions about possible exposure and receive guidance on whether they should seek testing or medical advice.
The initiative is intended to make HIV information easier to access while reducing fear and stigma. HIV may remain without noticeable symptoms for years, making voluntary and confidential testing important after a possible exposure.
HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, contaminated needles, infected blood and from a mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding when preventive treatment is not provided. It does not spread through hugging, shaking hands, sharing food, sitting together or other ordinary social contact.
Karnataka HIV Testing Can Improve Early Treatment
Early diagnosis allows a person who tests positive to be connected to medical care and begin treatment promptly. Antiretroviral therapy does not eliminate HIV from the body, but it can suppress the virus, protect the immune system and enable people to live longer and healthier lives.
People seeking testing can visit an Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre, generally located in government hospitals and other public health facilities. These centres provide counselling, confidential HIV testing and referrals to treatment and support services.
NACO states that ART is available free through public health facilities. People who receive a positive result can be linked to an ART centre for medical assessment, medicines, counselling, monitoring and adherence support. The toll-free HIV/AIDS helpline 1097 can also provide information about nearby testing and treatment facilities.
Karnataka HIV Numbers Highlight 95-95-95 Goals
The global 95-95-95 targets aim for 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of diagnosed people to receive sustained treatment and 95% of those receiving treatment to achieve viral suppression.
Karnataka’s figures underline the importance of improving every stage of this process. Testing alone is insufficient unless people who receive a positive result are quickly linked to treatment and supported to continue taking their medicines.
Closing the remaining gap will require confidential testing, accurate information, stigma-free healthcare and stronger follow-up for people who discontinue treatment. The figures also reinforce an important public-health message: HIV is a manageable chronic infection when it is diagnosed early and treated consistently.
